What really strikes me about the Birmingham live version is how much Ian's voice has matured and grown into this powerful thing of beauty by this time, in that more audible second verse he's hitting notes like he never did before in his career as his wailing takes on power like it's never possessed all while the playing is as concise and accurate as it was ever gonna get for Joy Division, you're hearing a band at it's absolute peak before it all of course comes crashing down.
